Free Covid test kits
The White House on Tuesday (Jan. 18) launched a website for U.S. citizens to order free COVID-19 home test kits, one day earlier than originally planned.
Americans can now go to COVIDTests.gov and request four home test kits per household, which will be shipped by the U.S. Postal Service.
White House spokeswoman Sachs told reporters that the site is in “beta testing” and is operating at “limited capacity” until its official launch Wednesday morning.
The initial launch of the site is part of the Biden administration’s efforts to address cargo availability and long lines at testing sites at a time when the Omicron variant is causing a record number of new coronavirus infections in the United States.
President Biden said last December that the federal government would purchase 500 million doses of home testing reagents for the online program. He announced last Thursday that he was increasing the order to 1 billion doses.
The reagents will generally be shipped within 7 to 12 days of the order. Shipping time within the continental United States is likely to be within one to three days.
The Biden administration also ordered private insurers to cover the cost of eight home tests per month starting Jan. 15, which will allow Americans to reimburse their insurers for the tests they buy from retailers.
